She was born on June 1, 1929 as Fatima Rashid in Rawalpindi, British India, daughter to Jaddanbai and Uttamchand Mohanchand, a Hindu Mohyal Brahmin. Her mother was a well-known dancer, singer, actor, composer, and director. This is what paved the way for Fatima to become a child artiste (Baby Rani) as early as 1935. She is the sister of Bollywood actor, Anwar Hussain and Akhtar Hussain.One of her best-known roles was that of Radha in theAcademy Award-nominatedMother India(1957), a performance that won her Best Actress trophy at theFilmfare Awards. In 1958, Nargis married herMother Indiaco-star, actorSunil Dutt, and left the film industry. She would appear infrequently in films during the 60s. Some of her films of this period include the dramaRaat Aur Din(1967), for which she got the inauguralNational Film Awardfor Best Actress.
